JOSEPH ALLRED is a rare one. They create music that feels as musical as it feels like a painting, or a poem, or a philosophy. (They are also a painter, and a lyrical poet, and a philosopher, and likewise, any creation borne from those modes of expression feels as much like what it is as it feels like music.)

Joseph is a quiet one and a deep one. When I listen to their music, or see their art, or read their words, it’s as if I can hear them speaking every language at once, and also as if I can see their reflection crystallizing shyly yet clearly in the spaces between the notes, the strokes, the words.

This album is stately, humble, demurely unfurling itself outside the boundaries of time.

A hare with a sprain stumbling delicately through the brush.
Tall grass shaking and settling beneath the elegant blanket of autumnal air.
The stream breathing with babbling, lyrical insistence.
The eddying drama of clouds of buzzing insects dreaming.
Eyes ensconced in a face that gleams with revelation.
Drying foliage upturned by a hovering shrug of wind.
The horizon hammering brilliantly against branches ripe with emptied nests.
The sun frozen in sky, burning forever—
