I felt like I wished I had learned to play guitar instead of earning an English degree.
Their fervor and precision chaos applied to an on-stage presence that was both confident and scrutable, assembled yet dangerous, combined with songs that are genuinely danceable and undeniably alluring and specifically and emphatically not the same old half-hearted sadboy dogshit being chucked out by the flacid idiots who happened upon a pirate stream of the Meet Me in the Bathroom documentary their first year at NYU film school and who plague dozens of curated ‘hot new indie’ Spotify playlists, all in my view added up to one thing for Zastava: quality. Moontype is an American indie rock band from Chicago, Illinois. The group was originally a solo project of vocalist Margaret McCarthy while she attended Oberlin College, but later expanded into a full band with guitarist Ben Cruz and drummer Emerson Hunton. As a solo project, McCarthy released her first EP under the Moontype alias titled Fan Music. The band released their debut full-length album, Bodies of Water, in 2021 on Born Yesterday Records.

Moontype expanded into a fully-fledged four-piece since the release of their Bodies of Water LP. The band now features Emerson Hunton on drums, and Joe Suihkonen and Andrew Clinkman on guitar.

In 2025, Moontype signed to Orindal Records, the label run by Advance Base’s Owen Ashworth. The signing coincided with the release of their first music since 2021, single "Long Country."

As USX enters their third decade as a band, they continue to push their sound into challenging new territory, blending wall- of-sound torrents of guitar, melancholic Appalachian dirge, and experimental electronic textures into a seamless and intense whole.

Planning for Burial is the musical project of American musician and singer-songwriter Thom Wasluck. Based in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Wasluck started to perform as "Burial" in 2005 and released the debut album, Leaving in 2009. Wasluck plays all instruments during both his home recordings and live performances.

Nightosphere seem to have found themselves at a certain stage in being a band. After several years of playing and performing together, they’ve defined a sound and identity for themselves to stand on. Katabasis, their album from last year, contains the downtrodden slowcore sound fit for many of the wide open, grey expanses found in the Great Plains area.
This though, is enlivened through dark, western sounding flourishes, and an eerie but reassuring etherealness that transudes throughout its runtime. It’s expressive and has a feeling of resolution.-- POST-TRASH

KINSHIP is the alt-folk recording project of upstate-NY-native-turned-Boston-music-person Steve Kurz. Kinship’s 2024 record, ‘Today and Tomorrow Night’, is about the space between what can and can't be controlled, thinking and overthinking, homes real and imagined. Leaning into home recording as a means to reflect the sonic ethos of a physical space, the groundedness of Kinship’s sound serves as the anchor to the themes of curiosity – equal parts cosmic, introspective, and playful – that emerge in the record’s lyrics. For the summer of 2025, the stars align and Kinship manifests as a four-piece band of longtime musical collaborators, friends, and heroes: Max Morton, Luke Diamond, and Roy “bigroy” Marshall.

BADVRIL (San Fran) - San Francisco based, Badvril, is derived directly from dichotomy. From creating contrast both sonically and aesthetically, the band seeks to generate a persona that is true to the creator, lead singer, and lead guitarist, Becket Schroeder.

Badvril pulls influence from rural upbringings representing their diy spirit while also drawing from city elements in their visual storytelling. Additionally, the band attempts to layer soft hazy vocals with jarring instrumentals to further their juxtaposing ideals.

She also draws heavily from the pioneers of the early alt-country scene--Cowboy Junkies, Freakwater, and Giant Sand--lending her songs a quiet edginess and subterranean power. LQ was born and raised in rural northern New Hampshire, made homes for herself all over the world, and now holes up in Santa Barbara, California.

The current lineup is Shane Parish on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass, and Danny Piechocki on drums. Their 9th studio album, Expansion, was released on October 22, 2022 on Trevor Dunn’s Riverworm Records.

 is an Asheville-based improv trio. Comprised of Brett Naucke (electronics), Thom Nguyen (drums), and Adam Lion (vibraphone), the trio utilizes an idiosyncratic improvisational language which prioritizes spontaneity, process, and the unknown. A sonic mishmash of cacophony, harmony, density and repetition, the group embodies musical extremes which branch in every direction.

combine prog rock excess with 1970s power pop ear Candy. Like other Texas luminaries Doug Sahm and Billy Joe Shaver, Aubrey's lyricism combine heart felt sincerity with self reflective humor. Modular synth Wizard Jared Hooker gives the music a sophisticated, harmonic language, creating the perfect backdrop for Andy Burns' incendiary lead guitar. Drummer Joe Exposito and bassist Steve Streit dutifully serve the song providing a firm back bone to these rock 'n' roll gems.

Where other bands might falter under the weight of stylistic overload, Upchuck carve forward across the cement with a sense of charmed ease. What binds Upchuck together is a purity of intention, an organic loyalty to a thick knot of uncalculated friendships, struggles, and desires.

Forming in South Florida with the intention to record a short EP and play one show, Gouge Away were driven by the need to write music and take a stab at topics they weren’t hearing in their local scene. They were influenced by bands like Fugazi, Unwound, The Jesus Lizard, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Paint it Black.

A couple years later, they put out “, Dies” on local label, Eighty-Sixed Records, which they didn’t expect to reach beyond their hometown. After some touring, they released “Burnt Sugar” on Deathwish Inc. in 2018 which naturally took a more personal approach when Christina Michelle was dealing with her mom’s heart complications and misdiagnoses. Following the release of the album, they toured extensively throughout the US and beyond. While on tour and in their small pockets of downtime, they eagerly wrote and demoed songs for a third album, pulling influence not only from the nostalgia of the bands they grew up listening to, but developing and pushing the sense of urgency, noise, and introspective lyrics they felt most represented them.

Touring came to a halt in 2020, canceling a full year of plans in an instant. Gouge Away took time for themselves to move to different parts of the country and focus on their personal lives. On New Years Eve just beginning 2022, they decided it was time to revisit their demoed material, and to do it justice by allowing it to see the light of day.

They recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East in March 2023, completely analog to tape and almost entirely live, without the use of a computer. The goal was to sound like five friends playing music in a room together, unpolished and far from being over-produced, which is what the heart of Gouge Away has always been.

As an ever-evolving project, KCC is fueled by collaboration, the duo seeking out individuals who are moved by the moment, and subsequently capturing the minutiae when different combinations of artistry and creativity collide.
